Skana

Collin Hanney, 1971, 27 min., col., documentary.

In 1968, the first pod of killer whales was captured in British Columbia. They were held in net pens at Garden Bay/Hospital Bay in Pender Harbour on the Sunshine Coast. Members of the pod were separated, but one was kept for study and training. Collin Hanney filmed the only record of that early training. Skana traces her initial care, her transfer to the Vancouver Aquarium’s B.C. Tel pool, and her public performances.

"[T]here is a much larger story surrounding this, and in light of our understanding of whales and whale behaviour today - it seems woefully ignorant! However, everything (and everyone) grows from what has gone before - the history counts!"
— Shendra Hanney
